Overview of LPFM Legislation (12/21/00)

On Friday, December 15, the anti-LPFM language contained in the Grams legislation passed both the House and Senate as part of the omnibus budget bills. To view a summary of the anti-LPFM legislation, click here.

S. 3020
Senator Grams (R-MN) introduced S. 3020, which is similar to the anti-LPFM bill that passed the House in April, 2000.

This bill, like the House bill, H.R.3424, drastically curtails low power radio. It requires the FCC to conduct limited low power radio experiments, and requires further Congressional action to authorize the full low power radio created by the Federal Communications Commission. S.2989
Low power radio supporters should oppose all legislative action, but the best of all available options is S.2989, which was introduced by Senators John McCain and Robert Kerrey on July 27, 2000. S. 2989 allows low power radio to move forward and ensures that the FCC will respond to legitimate concerns about interference. For a copy of S.2989, click here.

S.2068
Sen. Judd Gregg (R-NH) has introduced S. 2068 in the Senate. S.2068 would eliminate low power radio entirely. S. 2068 has 35 cosponsors as of September 11, 2000 (the last additional co-sponsor signed on June 8, 2000).To find out about Senator Gregg's co-sponsors, click here.

HR3439
