MAP Challenges License Renewals of All Commercial TV Stations in Portland
Posted: Friday December 22, 2006
On behalf of the Oregon Alliance to Media Reform, MAP filed a Petition to Deny Renewal of all the commercial television stations in the Portland market that offer regularly scheduled newscasts. According to a Center for Media and Public Affairs study, in the four weeks prior to the 2004 election, less than 1% of Portland newscast time was devoted to state level elections, about 9% to ballot issues and less than 1% to other local elections. The petition argues that singly and together, each of these stations has failed to meet the needs of their community of license and therefore renewal of their licenses would not serve the public interest.
