Comcast – NBC Universal Merger
Comcast’s proposed acquisition of NBC Universal (NBCU) would be the most extensive merger of the Digital Age, due to its impact on a number of communications sectors. Comcast, the nation’s largest cable operator, would control one of the four major broadcast networks.
The deal would:
- Have a negative impact on culturally diverse programming in local communities, and media ownership and staffing nationwide
- Cause an increase in cable rates for consumers
- Pose a threat to online video outlets that are not owned by Comcast or NBC (such as Netflix, Boxee, and others)
- Allow a single company to own TV stations, cable systems, and Internet services in 11 of the largest cities, including New York, San Francisco, Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington DC, and others.
This deal must be stopped. We cannot allow free expression, diversity, and competition to suffer further from such massive media consolidation.
The Department of Justice and the Federal Communications Commission are currently evaluating the companies’ merger application. Media Access Project is closely involved in these deliberations.
