When there is effective competition in a market, prices should go down, not up. By constantly increasing rates even as telcos and satellite try to compete, our friends at Comcast keep proving that there is not enough competition. This time, the rate increase is disguised as a pass-along charge for the extra cost of installing next generation DOCSIS 3.0 modems. But Comcast will surely recover that cost. and more. from the much higher prices it will charge for faster internet service.

Updated: Comcast Hiking Cable-Modem Fee to $5 From $3 Monthly Nationwide – Operator Cites Cost for DOCSIS 3.0 Equipment for Increase

Comcast this fall will increase the monthly lease fee for cable modems to $5 nationwide — a 66% increase over the current $3 monthly fee — which the operator said is necessary to offset the cost of rolling out next-generation services such as DOCSIS 3.0.
