MAP Statement on FCC Investigation of Wireless Industry

26 August 2009 No Comment

Andrew Jay Schwartzman, President and CEO of Media Access Project (MAP), made the following statement regarding the Federal Communications Commission’s decision to examine wireless competition at its public meeting, to be held today:

“This investigation is long overdue. The country’s four major wireless providers have enjoyed the fruits of market power for too many years, at the expense of the public’s ability to gain widespread access to low-cost mobile broadband services.

Wireless is a keystone for communications in the 21st century economy. Promoting competition and consumer choice in the wireless arena must therefore become a central tenet to the Commission’s mission to enhance broadband nationwide. This issue directly and unmistakably impacts the public’s First Amendment rights to free expression and speech.”
