MAP Makes Case for Unlicensed Access in ‘White Spaces’

On behalf of a diverse coalition of organizations, MAP filed comments in the FCC’s “white spaces” proceeding, arguing the benefits of unlicensed access in the broadcast bands. Despite the limited availability of unlicensed spectrum roughly 5,000 commercial wireless ISPs (WISPs) provide broadband services to hundreds of thousands of mostly rural consumers and volunteers have brought wireless connectivity to thousands in poor urban neighborhoods. Permitting unlicensed access into the broadcast bands would provide “rocket fuel” for the development of community and wireless broadband in these underserved communities.
